Popcorn is a simple Safari extension that will show you IMDb and Metascore ratings on Netflix. It is simple and straightforward to use, have no ads and doesn’t track you or collect your personal data.
And best of all? It’s completely free.
Requirements
Popcorn for Safari requires Safari 14 which is available on macOS Big Sur and on macOS Catalina as a standalone update available through the Software Update menu in the System Preferences. It also requires Netflix page in English language so it is able to match the movie titles properly. You can still use any subtitles you want.
Installation
Start by downloading the Popcorn app from the Mac App Store. This is the containing macOS app that Safari extension is bundled with.
Open the app and it will tell you if the extension is currently active in Safari and if not - a button there can take you directly to Safari preferences where you need to enable it.
So when you open preferences just tick the box to activate the extension. You may also need to confirm the action.
Hang tight, there’s one more step to actually run it. While browsing netflix.com, if the popup doesn’t show, open it by clicking Popcorn toolbar item in Safari and finally allow it to run.
And that’s it, prepare your popcorn!
Usage
When you install the extension successfully, there’s nothing really more to do. Open movie details and ratings should appear above the description. Please note that this is the only place where Popcorn for Safari can display ratings currently.
Did you notice IMDb text is also a link? 👀 It can take you to IMDb movie page directly.
Troubleshooting
If you took all the steps above but you still can’t get ratings to show, check the following:
- Make sure Popcorn extension toolbar icon in Safari is showing in color while you’re browsing Netflix. That means you installed it properly, granted all the necessary permissions and that it is running.
- Make sure Netflix profile language is English. For a help with setting language on Netflix, please check this article. Look under the Change your Netflix profile language.
